Description
The Nabatian caravan city of Peter, inhabited already in prehistoric times, was located between the Red Sea and the Dead Sea and was an important crossing point of trade caravan routes between Arabia, Egypt and Syria. Petra is a city half–built, half-hewn out of the rock, surrounded by mountains with winding gorges. It is one of the most important archaeological sites in the world and currently one of the existing 7 wonders of the world. Eastern architectural traditions are intertwined with Hellenistic ones here. This is the place that is worth seeing, as it will definitely not leave anyone indifferent. Many buildings of Petra were erected in different epochs and under different owners of the city, including the Idumeans (XVIII—II centuries BC), Nabataeans (II century BC — 106 AD), Romans (106-395 AD), Byzantines and Arabs. In the XII century AD, they were owned by the Crusaders.
